Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup Brno, Czech

AARO VAINIO HAD THIS SEASON’S BEST WEEKEND IN BRNO

Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup continued in Czech Republic at Brno track with its fifth and sixth round. Weekend was full of happenings and drama with penalties and crashes.

As all the cars are similar and each driver is eager to reach the podium position, the competition is really tough. Brno, as mentioned originally to be designed for motorcycle racing, is very challenging track. This five kilometer track has long straights and fast corners and nearly none such corners that demand hard breaking. This means that when your car functions well and you build up the speed, it’s very difficult to overtake such driver.

Only 16-year-old Aaro Vainio was in Brno for the first time and he was quite pleased with the weekend. On Saturday Vainio had starting grid position four for first race and he finished the race on fifth place.

”The start went well but when shifting to second gear I made a mistake and right away I was overtaken by one car”, said Vainio who then soon moved back to the fourth place.

There was a crash during the first lap and safety car came in and it was there for about three laps. When safety car left Vainio had maybe a bit too long of a gap to the car ahead.

”Aaro had a good pace and was driving good lap times in a group which included Adam Kout, Kevin Korjus and Luciano Bacheta. The group tried to catch Arthur Pic ahead of them but wasn’t able to, Pic was unbeatable today”, said Vainio’s assistant Jani Pirttinen. ”This was Aaro’s best race so far”.

”I made few unfortunate mistakes and at times the rear felt quite slippery.”

Starting from grid position nine tomorrow means that it will be a tough race in order to move up to gain good points. Time qualifying really has integral part in this class” Vainio said.

On Sunday after few penalties for other drivers Aaro Vainio’s starting grid position moved up to seventh place. The expectations were high for Sunday after good result from Saturday and the aim was to be among top five, unfortunately it didn’t happen this time. Vainio was eighth.

”He got an average start and when speeding up Aaro lost one position. After first corner when trying to get more speed fifth gear didn’t work and three cars overtook him when he lost some speed”, Jani Pirttinen said.

Vainio reached the chequered flag on eighth place.

”We knew it’s going to be a tough race since cars are quite even. Being amongst top five was the goal, it didn’t happen today, but we can be quite pleased with the weekend. Aaro gained nine points which is more than he has got during previous four rounds”, Pirttinen reported.

”All in all Aaro is progressing speed wise, pace is getting better and team has been satisfied with the performance. Next week we have physical exams in Kuortane with Tapio Korjus and then we head to France to Magny-Cours.”
